300 + farmers are directly supported under CASI technological activities and more than 600 hectares of land has been cultivated by CASI machine service. Thanks to SRFSI’s initiation that started with five nodes which encouraged RDRS to extend the work to five additional nodes.

– Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Services (RDRS), Bangladesh

About Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Services (RDRS):

RDRS Bangladesh is a national humanitarian development organization operating in Bangladesh since 1972. The organization emerged immediately after the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 as a response to the humanitarian crisis of the war victims who came back from the refugee camps across the border in India. It started as a relif and rehabilitation organization in the northwest region and gradually evolved as multifaceted development organization with its twin objectives of proverty alleviation and empowering the marginal and disadvantaged population. Initially, the organization started as a Bangladesh field program of Geneva-based Lutheran World Federation/Department for World Services (LWF/DWS). RDRS Bangladesh was localized in 1997 and registered under the Trust Act as a national NGO in Bangladesh.

Currently RDRS is implementing its program in 29 districts across the country. The total population of the working area is 70 million of which 1.8 million people are direct program participants of RDRS.

With a vision of a just and peaceful society where citizens live in dignity, freed from poverty, distress and ignorance in a sustainable environment, RDRS works with the poor and their organizations in order to build their capacity to advance their empowerment; create resilience to withstand adversity; and improve access to opportunities for the poor to realize decent lives free from poverty and distress.

Key learnings and reflections:

  • Without private sector involvement, it is very difficult to out scale the CASI service at farmers’ affordable level. IP committee is capable of establishing the linkages between different actors for better access by technical services, that is why public and private sector relationship has strengthened for better support.
  • Private sectors are more interested to make a profit by using machine service, so the capacity of the IP facilitators needs to be increased as well as machine hub. IP committee members are able to run their business which might be used as a revolving fund. Also, they are competent to provide capacity building and business promotion training among staff.
  • Conceptualization of CASI is very important among Scientists and Agronomist that will be helpful for identifying and out-scaling the technologies. Farmers leaders or federations are equally enthusiastic to identify suitable CASI technology and their service techniques which are appositions for local level climatic factors, socio-economic, and Socio-cultural environments, and farmers’ practices.
  • Involving ICT in technology dissemination can engage the young generation in agricultural activities.
  • Year-round income options for the LSP are very important and need to provide multipurpose use of machines and other income options. Service providers and machine owners are operating different agricultural types of machinery like power tiller, thrasher, and transplanter that are very important for customer satisfaction as well. One-stop services are considered necessary not just for farmers but also for more involvement of government services engagement.
  • The engagement and proper functioning of all actors of the CA machine value chain are very important. Farmers are adopting agricultural service actors along with machine service value chains in the application of CASI technologies.
  • Skill driver and local level machine repair and maintenance facilities are very important, so the local workshop owner needs to be involved with the project activities.

Future Actions:

  • Total 356 farmers are directly supported under CASI technological activities where 662 hectares of land has cultivated by CASI machine service. And more than 10 Federation has been engaged with CASI technological service for business promotional activities. But the next step would be to focus on the implementation of quantitative studies in Bangladesh to assess the impact of SRFSI.

  • Future action will be to develop CASI materials for various audiences.
